How to use the word counter
Paste your text into the box and the counts update as you type. The tool shows words, characters, sentences and an estimated reading time based on 200 words per minute.
Writers use it to hit word limits for essays, articles and social posts. Students use it for assignments with a strict word count. Marketers use it to keep meta descriptions under the recommended length.
Why reading time matters
Knowing how long a piece takes to read helps you match the format to the audience. Blog posts that take 3 to 7 minutes to read tend to perform well in search, while short posts suit social media.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Punctuation alone is not counted as a word.
Does it count characters with spaces?
Yes. The character total includes spaces, which is what most word processors and forms expect.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
